Mr. Philip Selton was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York in 1987 and was commissioned as an army officer and assigned to the First Armored Division in West Germany. Mr. Selton served on active duty for five years and deployed to such countries as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Storm. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his performance during Combat Operations in Iraq.
After leaving active duty in the military, Mr. Selton worked as a stock broker for four years in New Jersey.
Mr. Selton became a special agent in the FBI in 1996 and was assigned to the Newark Division. He worked on an organized crime squad, and his investigations focused on the La Cosa Nostra. In 2002, Mr. Selton was promoted to be a supervisory special agent in the Newark Division. In that capacity, he supervised a drug squad targeting Mexican, Colombian, and Caribbean criminal enterprises. He later became the supervisor of an organized crime squad targeting non-traditional criminal enterprises.
In 2005, Mr. Selton was designated as a Unit Chief in the International Terrorism Operations Section 1 (ITOS 1), Counterterrorism Division, at FBI Headquarters. As a unit chief, Mr. Selton was responsible for the program management of all al Qaeda and related international terrorism investigations in 16 FBI field offices. In 2006, Mr. Selton was promoted to Assistant Section Chief of ITOS 1, responsible for the program management of al Qaeda and other related international terrorism investigations in all 56 FBI field offices.
In 2007, Mr. Selton was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the Cleveland Division. As ASAC, he is responsible for the management of counterterrorism, cyber, security, and other programs,
as well as the Toledo Resident Agency.
