Mr. Jones was born and raised near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1986 and upon graduation was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served as an Infantry Platoon Commander, deployed to the Western Pacific and Orient, served as a Deep Reconnaissance and In-Extremis Hostage Rescue Detachment Commander, and was awarded a Bronze Star for combat operations in the Persian Gulf. Following his return to the United States, Mr. Jones earned a Master's Degree from Syracuse University.
Mr. Jones joined the FBI in 1996 and was assigned to the Kalamazoo, Michigan office of the Detroit Division. In 1999, he was presented the FBI Director's Award for Excellence by a New Employee for his leadership in the investigation of a domestic terrorism group plotting to attack local, state, and federal authorities.
In 2002, Mr. Jones was assigned to the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters and served as a Supervisor in the Usama Bin Laden Unit of the International Terrorism Operations Section I. There he supported multiple FBI field divisions targeting al Qaeda cells inside the United States. He was promoted to unit chief in 2003.
In 2004, Mr. Jones was assigned to the Rochester office of the FBI's Buffalo Division, where he supervised a broad spectrum of criminal and cyber investigations in New York State’s third largest city.
In 2007, Mr. Jones was assigned overseas for one year in a classified joint duty position with the United States Special Operations Command. In this capacity, he traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Horn of Africa.
In 2008, Mr. Jones was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Cleveland Division and assumed responsibilities for the Intelligence and Foreign Counterintelligence programs.
