Two Cleveland Residents Sentenced for Impersonating Federal Agents

William J. Edwards, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced that 2 defendants were sentenced by Judge Peter C. Economus on July 10, 2009 for their role in a scheme to impersonate federal agents in order to steal money from elderly women. Both defendants pled guilty on January 22, 2009 to three counts of impersonating a federal agent and one count of conspiracy to impersonate a federal agent.

Lemmie Steve Wilson, age 73, of 13518 Beaumont Street, East Cleveland, Ohio, was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $9,306.00 in restitution to his victims along with co-defendant Jomo Wilson. Lemmie Wilson is the father of co-defendant, Jomo Wilson.

Jomo Wilson, age 40, of 13518 Beaumont Street, East Cleveland, Ohio, was sentenced to 60 months imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $9,306.00 in restitution to his victims along with co-defendant Lemmie Wilson.

Between October 20 and November 4, 2008, the defendants drove through neighborhoods in search of homes they believed were occupied by elderly women. Lemmie Wilson would then place a telephone call to those homes, dishonestly identify himself as a federal agent and ask the victim to assist in an investigation. Jomo Wilson would then go to the victims’ homes and, using a fake badge and identification, convince them to withdraw money from their bank accounts. The defendants successfully defrauded three victims before they were apprehended.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Gary D. Arbeznik and Daniel J. Riedl following investigation by the South Euclid Police Department, Cleveland Police Department, Shaker Heights Police Department, Mayfield Heights Police Department and the FBI.
