Former Chief of Police for Perkins Township Charged in Federal Funds Program Theft
William J. Edwards, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, today announced that a federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment against Timothy McClung, 47, of Sandusky, Ohio, charging him with one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and two counts of mail fraud. McClung was formerly the Chief of Police for Perkins Township, Ohio.
The indictment alleges that between May 1, 2004, and April 30, 2005, McClung was an agent of Perkins Township, an organization that received more than $10,000 in federal funds. The indictment further alleges that Perkins Township purchased and paid for multiple firearms, which McClung sold to third parties. The third parties paid McClung for the firearms, and McClung failed to return the money from the sale of the firearms to Perkins Township.
The indictment further alleges that between August 30, 2006, and September 28, 2006, McClung devised a scheme and artifice to defraud Perkins Township by selling firearms, purchased for the benefit of the Perkins Township Police Department, to third parties in return for payment.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Matthew B. Kall following investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
