Computer Crimes

The Cleveland Computer Crimes Squad is responsible for addressing computer crimes investigations within the Cleveland territory in conjunction with the National Infrastructure Protection Center in Washington D.C. These investigations include; intrusions into public and private computer systems (computer intrusion), computer facilitated white collar crimes/fraud and computer based child pornography.

Computer Intrusions
Incidents across the country, such as the distributed denial of service attacks, have highlighted the vulnerabilities of computer systems and the increased interest of hackers to cause damage for monetary or intellectual gain.

Title 18 United States Code Section 1030 makes accessing a computer without authorization or exceeding authorized access a federal offense and was drafted for the purpose of protecting computer systems. The FBI and this Office are committed to addressing all reported computer intrusions within its territory. If your system is attacked, please report this intrusion to the Computer Crimes Squad. Not only, may your system be victimized, but it could be part of a nationwide incident. The National Infrastructure Protection Center, together with local FBI Offices, is responsible for coordinating attacks across the country and outside the country. You may be in a position to provide valuable information that could be instrumental in solving a crime or in protecting other systems.

If you have been the victim of a computer intrusion, you may wish to file a complaint with the National Infrastructure Protection Center using their online compliant form at www.nipc.gov

Internet Fraud
If you have been the victim of a fraud on the internet, you may wish to file a complaint with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center at http://ic3.gov.  Also a joint group made up of federal agencies along with private industry developed the website, http://www.LooksTooGoodToBeTrue.com/This website serves as an educational tool for consumers in the prevention of internet fraud and identity theft. This website is funded by the FBI and Postal Inspection Service. The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), monster.com, Target and the Merchants Risk Council are also key partners in this endeavor.

Internet Crimes Against Children
The Internet is being used to produce and distribute/trade Child Pornography at an alarming rate. In addition, children are being targeted on the Internet by adults for illegal and harmful purposes. Both types of activity are federal offenses and investigated by the Computer Crimes Squad.
